Established in 1881 by John Elmes Beale, Beales is a department store that offers a wide array of branded merchandise. The company opened its first department store in Bournemouth, sparking an expansion drive that has resulted in the opening of 22 branches.

Beales has pursued acquisitions to strengthen its footprint in the industry. In 2010 it acquired Robb’s department store from Vergo Retail, followed by the acquisition of the Westgate Department store Rockdale the same year. By 2011, the company had acquired a total of 19 Westgate Stores as part of an aggressive expansion drive.

The company is currently a member of the Associated Independent Stores, an association that allows it to enjoy cost savings on buying textiles and nonfood goods in wholesale. The company had its stock listed on the London Stock Exchange. English Store took the company private as part of an equity takeover in 2015, resulting in the delisting of the stock in the LSE.
