BHP Group is a merged entity made up of New South Wales-based BHP (Broken Hill Proprietary) Company and Billiton which came together in 2001. While BHP was founded in 1885, Billiton traces its roots back to 1851. BHP began its operations as silver, lead, and zinc. On the other hand, Billiton was a tin mining company, which began its operations on Billiton (Belitung) island, Indonesia. BHP Group has its head office in Melbourne, Australia.

The company operates in the industrial metals and minerals industry, with specialty in the basic materials sector. Primarily, the company explores, extracts, and markets natural resources in several mines scattered across the globe. Besides acquiring, developing, and marketing basic materials, the company explores and refines oil and gas. Other services include freight solutions, trading, and finance. The company’s shares are traded on four exchanges including Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the New York Stock Exchange, the Australian Stock Exchange, and the London Stock Exchange.
