Carillion Plc was formed in July 1999 after a demerger from Tarmac, a company previously formed in 1903 that had its core business in building materials of heavy nature. The formation of Carillion combined both Tarmac’s construction and professional service provision. It had its headquarters in Wolverhamptom, West Midlands, United Kingdom.

It conducted its business mostly in the United Kingdom but also extended to the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Canada.

The kind of business it was involved in included the following;

  • Project management services and engineering and architectural design,
  • Construction projects in residential, commercial, corporate, government, defense, healthcare, financial, transport, aviation, gas and oil, and leisure sectors
  • Management of facilities services such as hospital maintenance, cleaning, accommodation of defense, and school meals provision.

The company was listed on the London Stock Exchange. It was compulsory liquidated in January 2018, which was considered the largest trading liquidation ever in the United Kingdom.
