Founded in 1984 as Catlin Underwriting Agencies Limited, was established as an underwriting agency at Lloyds of London. It had its headquarters in Hamilton, Bermuda, and operates in six regions worldwide, referred to as underwriting hubs. These are Europe, the United States, Canada, Bermuda, Asia-Pacific, and London/UK.

Catlin operations includes reinsurance, wholesale insurance, property underwriting, non-life, and casualty treaty insurance. It divides its business into the following product groups; Energy, Property, Political risks, Aviation, Reinsurance, and War risk.

Catlin Group underwrites the following classes of insurance; health and accident, inland marine, construction, motor fleet, engineering, aviation, energy, satellite, livestock, professional liability, and marine cargo.

The reinsurance classes underwritten are marine and aviation, property, excess of loss, and casualty. Catlin specialized in reinsurance and insurance business operating over 55 offices in 21 countries worldwide. The company’s shares were listed on the London Stock Exchange until its acquisition in May 2015 by the XL Group Plc.
