Compass Group was established in the UK in 1941 by Jack Bateman. At the time of founding, it was called Factory Canteens Ltd. In 1967, Grand Metropolitan acquired Factory Canteens Ltd, at that time known as Bateman Catering. The name Compass Group came into being in 1987 after a management buyout of Compass Services.

The company operates via subsidiaries, which offer services to customers in over 50 countries. Primarily, the company and its subsidiaries offer contract food services to institutions and other locations like sports venues. Also, the company runs restaurants in North America, Europe, and other international markets. Other services that Compass Group offers include reception services, cleaning services in facilities like hospitals, universities, and others.

Compass Group PLC’s global operations are headquartered in Chertsey, United Kingdom. The company went public through an IPO in 1988 and still trades on the London Stock Exchange. Compass Group is part of the FTSE 100 index since 1998.
