The company has its roots dating back to 1778, founded by William Clark. The company’s name changed to Clark & Debenhams in 1813 after William Debenhams became a partner in the business. The business was later renamed as Debenhams limited in 1905.

After starting as a single store, Debenhams Plc. has evolved to become a multinational retailer with 178 locations across the U.K, Ireland, and Denmark. The company’s stores in Denmark trade under the brand name Magasin du Nord, while Debenhams Ireland operates stores in Ireland.

Headquartered in Regent’s Place in London, Debenhams Plc. Occupies the most sires than any other department store in the U.K. In 2016, the retailer tweaked its business model to focus more on food beauty and gifts products and less on clothing.
