The company was formed with the intention of offering a quick and direct service to the consumer without the need for middlemen. It is also a pioneer insurance firm to extend operating timings to offer a 24-hour service including evenings and weekends providing its services directly on the telephone. The company offers an array of general insurance services. It is listed on London Stock Exchange and as a constituent of FTSE 100 Index. Direct Line has its headquarters in Bromley, UK.

The company has acquired several firms, including the Churchill Insurance Group, Privilege Insurance, Royal Insurance, European motor insurance companies. It also has collaborations with other insurance firms, including Prudential and others. Through rigorous advertising, the company has expanded its operations and has gained momentum earning several awards as the best insurance company.
