William Wood founded Wood & Davidson as a fishing and fish processing company in 1912. In 1964, Sir Ian Wood joined his father in the business and changed the name to John Wood & Son. The company expanded its operations into general marine engineering. Later, the company branched its operations into oil fields and heavy construction. In 2017, the company merged with Amec Foster Wheeler, a major rival to form the John Wood Group Plc.

William Wood operates through subsidiaries and provides services ranging from technical and engineering to clients in built environment, energy, and general industry. John Wood consolidates its operations between two major subsidiaries, namely Wood Group Engineering and Wood Group PSN. Through the subsidiaries, the company provides conceptual studies for projects, construction management, and production services for a range of industrial sectors. The company has its headquarters in Aberdeen, Scotland.
