The London Stock Exchange has been operating since 1801. However, the London Stock Exchange Group Plc came into being after the acquisition of Borsa Italiana based in Milan in 2007. The company operates in the financial services industry where stock exchanges are its main product.

After the acquisition of Borsa Italiana, the London Stock Exchange assumed the title of the most diversified Stock Exchange Group globally. Besides the Borsa Italiana merger, the LSE Group is in a strategic partnership with Oslo Børs to offer trading services in equities, derivatives, and fixed income markets. The company has a majority stake in MillenniumIT, which provides IT solutions to players in the capital markets industry. Other strategic partners with which the LSE Group is engaged include the Mongolian Stock Exchange and other major exchanges like the NYSE, NASDAQ, among others. The London Stock Exchange Group trades on the London Stock Exchange, and it is part of the FTSE 100 composite.
