Northgate plc began its journey in 1981 when Alan Noble started a vehicle renting business. Noble ran the business from his home and registered the business as Noble Self Drive Ltd. The business started with just six vehicles but later grew to 50. By 1983, the company name changed to Noble Van & Plant Hire Ltd, which began to expand via acquisitions. Further, the customer base for the business expanded across the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
Northgate plc grew into a holding company after making substantial acquisitions and domination of the sector. In addition to the UK and Ireland, the company has operations in Spain. The holding company controls three major subsidiaries, including Northgate (AVR) Limited, Northgate Vehicle Hire Limited, and Northgate (Europe) Limited. Northgate’s customers include manufacturing and engineering entities, local authorities, and public utilities. The company trades on the LSE as NTG and has its headquarters in Darlington, the United Kingdom.
