Old Mutual

John Fairburn established old Mutual in 1845 as Mutual Life Assurance Society of the Cape of Good Hope. Under 40 years later, the company rebranded and changed its name to South Africa Mutual Life Assurance Society but later to Old Mutual. During the late 19th Century and the early 20th Century, the company was solely an insurance provider. However, Old Mutual expanded its operations into wealth management and investment advisory services. The company serves customers across Africa, Latin America, and Europe, but the headquarters are in Cape Town, South Africa.

Old Mutual’s insurance services range from casualty insurance, property, life, and savings insurance. In addition, the company offers asset management services and other banking products and services. Old Mutual relies on digital platforms, physical branches, worksites, and independent advisors as platforms through which it interacts with the customer base. The company has a primary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange. Other listings include the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, Malawi, and Frankfurt stock exchanges.
