Poundland Group

Poundland is a variety, retail store chain that sells a wide variety of items at £1. Founded in 1990, the retail store offers more than 3,000 items in what it terms as Amazing Value for money. After opening its first store in Burton upon Trent, the store chain expanded its footprint into Wolverhampton, followed by the opening of the Hong Kong Office in 1996.

The variety store chain has since expanded its footprint into Europe with the opening of a store chain in the Republic of Ireland under the brand name Dealz. The retail chain continued to record strong sales at the peak of the economic recession in 2009, even as most retailers came under pressure. However, the retailer came under pressure in 2010 with the emergence of more discount retailers.

Poundland was sold to private equity firm Warburg Pincus in 2010 as part of a £200 million transaction. In 2015, the company acquired 99p stores. In 2016, it was yet again sold to Steinhoff International after a series of underperformance.
