Tesco

Founded in 1919 by Jack Cohen, Tesco is a British multinational that operates as a grocery retailer. It is one of the largest retailers in the world by the sheer size of gross revenues generated annually. The company has retail outlets in eleven countries spread across Asia and Europe.

The company has its headquarters in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England. Some of the countries where Tesco has established its footprint include the Republic of Ireland, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Malaysia. Tesco pulled out of the U.S. market in 2013.

Tesco has diversified its area of operations since inception by expanding its footprint into the business of selling books, clothing as well as electronics and furniture, among others. In addition to operating as a retailer, Tesco also provides retail, banking, and insurance services.

Tesco is only listed on the London Stock Exchange. Given its market cap of more than £10 billion, it is one of the constituents of the FTSE 100 Index.
