Founded in 2007 following the merger of Thomas Cook AG and MyTravel Group, Thomas Cook Group was once one of the largest global travel group. The company operated under two segments of the tour operator, as well as an airline. The company also maintained travel agencies across Europe.

At its peak, the travel group had its stock listed on the London Stock Exchange as well as the Frankfurt stock exchange. The company was forced into compulsory liquidation on September 23, 2019. The liquidation drive came amidst calls to split the business in a bid to help in the revitalization of the company’s financial health that had deteriorated in the previous years.

The liquidation resulted in over 20,000 employees worldwide losing their jobs a, move that affected over 600,000 customers in the U.K. Following its collapse, a number of the company’s business segments fell in the hands of other companies, including travel stores.
