Anil Kumar Agarwal founded Sterlite Industries in 1976 in the Indian city of Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay). In 1986, the Agarwal family wanted to consolidate several of his businesses into one conglomerate, which resulted in the formation of Vedanta Resources. Two years later, the company floated its shares on the Bombay Stock Exchange. The company went on to list on the London Stock Exchange in 2003. Today, the company is listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India, the New York Stock Exchange, and the London Stock Exchange.

Vedanta Resources operates globally in several industries. On the one hand, the company extracts and processes minerals. Other activities include exploration and production of oil and gas, and power generation and distribution. The primary markets in which the company operates are Africa, India, Australia, and Ireland. The company operates via a series of subsidiaries, including Madras Aluminum Company, Bharat Aluminum Company, and Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited, among many others.
