Cisco Systems

Sandy Lerner and Leonard Bosack were two Stanford University computer scientists who came together to establish Cisco Systems Inc. in 1984. Interestingly, the first product Cisco produced owes much of its earlier existence to Stanford University. Stanford researchers contributed immensely to the establishment of Cisco by helping to develop a multiprotocol router for on-campus communication.

Presently, Cisco develops and sells networking solutions based on the Internet protocol framework. In particular, the company provides routers, wireless access points, and data center products. Additionally, Cisco provides solutions that cover internet security, cloud management, system management products, and advanced threat protection among others. The range of products that the company offers handle over 85% of the global internet traffic.

Cisco operates worldwide and it serves customers ranging from retail, enterprise, and governments. Since its establishment, the company has its headquarters in San Jose, California. Investors can trade Cisco’s shares via NASDAQ. Cisco is a constituent of the DJIA, S&P 100, S&P 500, and the NASDAQ 100 components.
