Merck & Co., Inc. traces its roots to 1668 when Friedrich Jacob Merck purchased and began to operate a pharmacy in Darmstadt, Germany. After almost 200 years of operation, Heinrich Emmanuel Merck transformed the apothecary in 1827 into a drug manufacturing facility. Heinrich Emmanuel Merck established a sales office for E. Merck AG in the US in 1887. However, Heinrich Emmanuel Merck’s grandson, George Merck established Merck & Co., Inc. in 1891 after joining the US based E. Merck AG.
Merck & Co., Inc. began producing its own drugs in 1903 and in January 13, 1978, the company floated on the New York Stock Exchange through an IPO. Merck trades as MRK and is a part of the DJIA, S&P 100, and S&P 500 components. The company operates worldwide where it provides healthcare solutions. Major segments of the company are Healthcare Services, Animal Health, and Pharmaceutical. Merck is based in Kenilworth, New Jersey.
