The UnitedHealth Group Incorporated was established in 1977 to operate as the holding company to Charter Med Incorporated. Richard Taylor Burke started Charter Med in 1974. The newly created company helped manage a series of newly acquired companies focused on health promotion and management. UnitedHealth Group continued to expand via acquisitions when it merged its Medicaid assets and operations with AmeriChoice.

For a long time, UnitedHeath’s area of focus has been the individual health plans and employer sponsored. The company offers health plans for diabetes patients and those suffering from cancer. In addition, the company provides benchmarking tools for medical practitioners with an ultimate goal of improving the quality of their service. The company operates via four segments, each focused on specific needs within the healthcare market. Rapid growth saw UnitedHealth float its shares via an IPO on the New York Stock Exchange. UnitedHealth Group has its headquarters in Minnetonka, Minnesota.
