Cash and carry

Strictly an epithet applied to a manufacturer’s or wholesaler’s warehouse from which retailers collect goods for resale to the general public – a kind of retailer’s supermarket. Nowadays there is a tendency, alien to the interests of retailers, to allow the general public to by-pass the middle-man (the retailer) and buy direct from wholesalers through their cash and carry, thereby obtaining lower prices. However, there is a risk that in putting the retailer out of business the public will lose the benefit of good after-sale services and the reliable advice that the specialist retailer can give.
