Delivery note
May take various forms, including that of a part copy of the relevant invoice or advice note. It is basically the paper listing and accompanying goods delivered to a customer and is signed by the customer on receipt. When the note is returned to the vendor it is prima facie evidence of delivery both as to place and person. The recipient should inspect the goods before signing the delivery note, particulary where the note states that the goods have been received in saleable condition. If in doubt he should indicate that his signature is ‘subject to inspection’ – otherwise he may be stopped from claiming for any damage in transit. Most delivery notes handled by common carriers include a warning that claims for damage will not be entertained unless made to both carrier and vendor within, say, three days.
