About the Indonesia Stock Exchange
The Indonesia Stock Exchange was formed in 2007 through the merger of the Jakarta Stock Exchange and the Surabaya Stock Exchange. This growing exchange now trades shares of over 600 listed companies, covering all major sectors of the Indonesian economy.
On this page, you’ll find a list of the companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, relevant indices that track the exchange, information about its illustrious history, and the performance of today’s tradable stocks.
The Jakarta Stock Exchange originally began life in 1912 under the Dutch Colonial Government, but due to events related to the two world wars, it closed several times before officially opening its doors again in 1977. Trading activity was slow at first, with only a few companies listed. However, under the new management of the Capital Market Supervisory Agency, the exchange’s trading activity and market capitalisation began to grow alongside the growth and prosperity experienced within Indonesia’s financial markets.
Regulatory changes made between 1988 and 1992 improved things further for the exchange, and thanks to the automatic trading systems introduced in 1995, growth continued when remote trading was made possible. The exchange rebranded as the Indonesia Stock Exchange (by which name it is known today) in 2007. This name changed was caused by a merger with the Surabaya Stock Exchange, and there has been a sizeable increase in trading volume since this time. The Indonesia Stock Exchange has achieved record growth in recent years.
The primary stock market indices used to report and measure value changes in the stocks listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange are the Jakarta Islamic Index and the Jakarta Composite Index. These act as the primary benchmarks for measuring market activities based on Islamic Law, and are designed using international, free-floating standards. The other major indices include:
- Individual Index
- Sector Stock Price Index
- LQ 45 Index
- Main Board and Development Board Indices
At the tail-end of 2019, there were a reported 656 listed companies on the Jakarta Stock Exchange. Listed stocks have a marketed capitalisation of over $350 billion (USD), and the Exchange has described itself as the “The Best Performing Stock Exchange for Long-term Investors in the world.”
