Operaattorina eikä integroituna öljy-yhtiönä Performance Shippingin erityinen rooli on tarjota kuljetuskapasiteettia rahtaajille samalla, kun se hallinnoi alusten toimintaa, kunnossapitoa, vaatimustenmukaisuutta ja kaupallista käyttöä. Sen liiketoiminta on pääomavaltainen ja sidoksissa kansainväliseen merenkulkusääntelyyn, polttoainekustannuksiin, rahoitusolosuhteisiin sekä laivaston ikään ja tehokkuuteen.
