Tyypin 1 diabetes johtuu immuunijärjestelmän hyökkäyksestä haiman insuliinia tuottaviin beetasoluihin, ja nykyinen hoito keskittyy suurelta osin insuliinin korvaamiseen ja glukoositasapainon hallintaan sen jälkeen, kun sairaus on jo puhjennut.
