Galaxy S IV Mini Appears on Samsung’s App Store

on May 27, 2013

Over the past couple of months there have been rumours suggesting that Samsung Electronics Co. (KRX:005930) is planning to release a smaller version of its latest flagship smartphone – the Galaxy S IV. The existence of the device, dubbed S IV Mini, hasn’t been confirmed by the South Korean company, but there has been several leaks supporting the rumours. The latest of these leaks occured yesterday, May 26, when the S IV Mini made a brief appearance on Samsung’s application store. The listing has now been removed, but it hasn’t gone unnoticed by ever-vigilant web users, who have documented the event. So, although still not an official confirmation, this leak gives much more credence to the rumours of the phone’s imminent release.

**S IV Mini rumours**
Rumours have suggested that the new smartphone will offer a 1.6GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch display and 8-megapixel camera. The phone is likely to provide a more affordable alternative to the S IV and will probably aim to attract customers who have avoided the S IV because of its size.
The move to release a smaller follow-up to the S IV isn’t much of a surprise, given that Samsung did the very same thing following the release of its previous flagship smartphone – the Galaxy S III. The S III Mini came in November last year with a 4-inch screen a 1GHz dual-core processor and with a lower price tag than its “big brother”. It was also aimed at European markets, which, assuming that Samsung has a coherent vision for the series, might be the case with the S IV Mini as well.

With no official confirmation of the device issued by Samsung so far, it’s unclear what the release timeframe for the device will be, but media reports have suggested that the South Korean company would be aiming to launch the device for sale in the summer, ahead of Apple’s new product announcements expected in the autumn.

Meanwhile the Galaxy S IV continues to sell like hotcakes. The phone has already become Samsung’s fastest selling smartphone ever, having reached 10 million units sold in 27 days (Sales of Galaxy S IV Hit 10 Million in 27 Days). The South Korean company has positioned the phone as a direct competitor to Apple Inc’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone, whose success is the benchmark for all smartphone manufacturers. But Samsung’s biggest strength has always been its ability to reach multiple segments of the market with products targeted at different price points. The S IV Mini falls perfectly in with that strategy and, it’s not the only version of the S IV that is expected to launch in the coming months. The South Korean giant has also been supported by Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG), the operator of the Android OS used in Samsung’s smartphones, which has recently announced that it would sell its own variant of the S IV. The Google version of the phone will go on sale on June 26 for $649.
