iNVEZZ.com Friday, August 23rd: Tesco (LON:TSCO) is planning to launch its own tablet computer under the brand name Hudl. The device, which should be released by Christmas, will be competing with some of the leaders in the sector, including Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Google’s Nexus 7. Tesco’s shares are trading at 364.34p as of 08:20 BST.

The seven-inch tablet is likely to provide easy ways to order items from Tesco and fast access to Blinkbox, the video-on-demand service with over 2.8 million users, which the company has controlled since April 2011, The Guardian has reported, quoting industry sources.

Back in February, the UK’s largest retailer applied for the Hudl trademark which covers goods such as tablets, mobile speakers, screen protectors and other accessories.
“The mind boggles at Tesco getting into this, but you can understand why they would,” The Guardian quoted Jeremy Davies, CEO of Context, which tracks technology sales in Europe, as saying. “It’s possible they would look to sell it for about £100, and initially order a few hundred thousand devices.”

Context has found that sales of tablets in Western Europe more than doubled in the first half of 2013, compared with the same period in 2012, while sales of PCs fell by 12%. The second quarter of 2013 marked a 43 percent increase in tablet shipments as compared to the same period last year, Strategy

Analytics has reported. It is expected that the fourth quarter will be even stronger as Apple will start selling its new iPad. Market research firm NPD last month released projections which suggest that worldwide tablet shipments could reach almost 364 million by 2014 and 589 million by 2017.
While Tesco hasn’t commented on the media reports about its own brand tablet computer, searching for “Tesco Hudl” on Google brings up a link to the company’s website. The page, which isn’t working at the moment, is titled “Buy hudl from our iPad & Tablets range.”
