In a move that could very well be repeated in other university cities around the UK, Liverpool city council has decided to recommend to its cabinet the creation of a taskforce to assess the impact that large student accommodation developments will have on the city.

The move comes in the wake of the successful approval of two accommodation projects due to be built in the Lime Street area, which will result in the construction of sufficient housing for one thousand students.
The task force will be mandated to consult developers, student bodies and university representatives, in an attempt to evaluate how the presence of so many students in the city centre will effect everyday city life.
The Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, was quick to stress that the taskforce would not be out to cast a shadow over planned developments, saying that he welcomed and valued the contribution that students made to the city.
However the Mayor also said that he was ‘mindful’ of how the increase in student accommodation could specifically affect the city centre.

After concerns were raised in January by property agents, City Residential, regarding whether the supply of student beds was consistent with forecast demand, the task force aims to focus on three specific areas: The suitability and viability of the current provision for student housing, the need for growth and the impact on Liverpool’s urban centre of rising student numbers.
Mr Anderson said: “I have asked for this review because, although we very much welcome and value the contribution that students make to the city, we need to be mindful of the recent rapid growth in student accommodation, and the knock-on effects it could have should there be any marked fluctuations in demand. It is crucial we have a diverse mix of uses of buildings in the city centre for residents, businesses, students and visitors alike.”
