Bitcoin price (BTC/USD) rallies to fresh highs of over $6,400

After taking a brief break on Monday, the Bitcoin price (BTC/USD) has rallied to fresh highs in today’s afternoon trading, surpassing the $6,400 level for the first time. The new Bitcoin price record, currently stands at $6,404, according to data from cryptocurrency tracker Coinmarketcap. Meanwhile, the CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index has pegged the record at $6,415.28.

The original cryptocurrency reached its previous high of over $6,250 on Sunday, just over a week after it surpassed the $6,000 mark for the first time. Unlike its previous attempt at this level, the cryptocurrency successfully defended the $6,000 mark in the subsequent trading session, which seems to have provided a foundation for further gains.

Bitcoin opened today’s trading at $6,114.85, which mean that the digital currency has gained more than $200 over the course of the day. Coinmarketcap data shows that the price has gained 4.5% in the past 24 hours. These gains make Bitcoin the best-performing cryptocurrency in the top 10. Most major altcoins are showing mixed results, with only BitConnect being able to match Bitcoin’s performance.

As of 17:16 GMT, the Bitcoin price stood at $6,360.12, according to Coinmarketcap. The coin’s total market capitalisation currently stands at nearly $106 billion, which represents 58.3% of the total value of the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin’s 24-hour trading volume currently stands at just over $2 billion.
