Amazon shares closed higher in the US amid a flurry of activity for the tech giant. One notable event is that a CEO has been appointed for Jeff Bezos joint healthcare venture with Berkshire Hathaway and JP Morgan.

The global tech firm is also set to work with Marriott Hotels and launch Alexa for Hospitality this summer.
Amazon shares ended the US Wednesday trading session 0.88% higher at $1,750.08. The stock is also in the green in out-of-hours activity.
Amazon’s joint healthcare venture moves forward
The three firms who are jointly creating a new healthcare provision option for their employees announced Wednesday they had appointed Dr. Atul Gawande as Chief Executive Officer of their joint venture.
The press release added that the new company would operate out of Boston as an independent entity and wouldn’t be burdened with profit-making related constraints or incentives. Dr. Gawande’s new position will be effective from July 9.
“We said at the outset that the degree of difficulty is high and success is going to require an expert’s knowledge, a beginner’s mind, and a long-term orientation,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon. “Atul embodies all three, and we’re starting strong as we move forward in this challenging and worthwhile endeavour.”
Alexa for Hospitality
Separately, Amazon announced earlier this week the launch of a new smart tech service – Alexa for Hospitality. Initially working with the Marriott International hotel group, Amazon Echo devices will allow hotel guests to order room service, make arrangements and plans, all just by talking to Alexa.
“Customers tell us they love how easy it is to get information, enjoy entertainment, and control connected devices by simply asking Alexa, and we want to offer those experiences everywhere customers want them,” said Amazon’s VP, Daniel Rausch.
Among the first Marriott hotels offering this service to their guests are, Charlotte Marriott City Centre and Marriott Irvine Spectrum.
“We will be evaluating guest feedback and adoption to inform how we expand the skills, features, and functionality offered through Alexa in our hotels,” said Marriott International VP of Customer Experience and Innovation, Jennifer Hsieh.
