Anthropic CEO explains how his company is different from OpenAI

The AI startup has already garnered investments from the likes of Amazon and Google. But neither of them has representation on its board, the chief executive said in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday.

That makes it different from peer OpenAI that is 49% owned by Microsoft Corp. The tech behemoth does have a non-voting seat on its board as well.

The aforementioned distinction is significant considering Lina Khan – Chair of the Federal Trade Commission is investigating investments the cloud companies have made into AI startups which she argues look more like a merger than a partnership.

Anthropic counts Amazon and Google as competitors

Note that $AMZN and $GOOGL are broadly seen as competitors of Anthropic as well. But CEO Dario Amodei is convinced their offerings are “complimentary to us in an economic sense”.

Speaking with CNBC, he agreed that AI models will get smarter moving forward but said limitations will likely remain in place in terms of what they can do.

In March, Anthropic launched “Claude 3” – the most powerful AI chatbot to date (read more). What it specializes in, the chief executive added, is “drawing the line” between giving false information and refusing to entertain harmless queries.
