Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is already revolutionizing the healthcare industry and is poised to transform pharmaceutical research, patient diagnostics, and post-operative care, according to Kimberly Powell, vice president of healthcare at Nvidia.

Speaking at Nvidia’s AI Summit during the Computex expo in Taipei, Powell emphasized the significant impact AI is expected to have on healthcare, more than any other sector.

AI’s role in accelerating drug discovery

AI is set to drastically change the landscape of drug discovery and development, a process that traditionally takes up to 15 years and can cost around $2 billion.

Powell highlighted that generative AI can address the complexities of drug development by exploring the vast chemical space, which contains an estimated 10 to the 60th power potential chemical compounds.

AI’s ability to model interactions between new chemical compounds and the human body can help reduce the 90% failure rate of drugs in clinical trials.

“Healthcare is probably the most impactful utility of generative AI that there will be,” Powell said, underscoring AI’s potential to generate new ideas, improve predictive accuracy, and model biological processes in innovative ways.

This technology is expected to enhance the success rate of new drugs entering clinical trials by providing better insights and reducing the time and cost involved in drug development.

Nvidia partners with healthcare giants for AI applications

Nvidia, now the world’s third-biggest company by stock value, has made healthcare a key area of focus, developing platforms, software, and medical devices aimed at improving digital imaging, diagnostic scans, and robot-assisted surgery.

In March, Nvidia announced partnerships with Johnson & Johnson and GE Healthcare to integrate AI into surgical procedures and medical imaging, respectively.

Powell explained that technologies used in self-driving cars to process sensor data and make real-time decisions are being adapted for healthcare applications, such as ultrasound imaging and robotic surgery.

Powell further stated,

If you think about an ultrasound, or even robotic surgery and self-driving cars, they’re not that different. There’s lots of sensor data coming in, so there are real-time decisions being made.

Generative AI in postoperative care

Generative AI will also play a crucial role in postoperative and follow-up care.

It can assist in compiling post-treatment reports with patient data and reviewing surgeries to assess outcomes and improve future procedures.

Powell also said,

There’s six to 12 people in that room operating and making decisions in real-time. And then, just like sports – a lot of athletes do this at the end of the game – surgeons also go back and look at the surgery to understand what they could have done better.
