Amazon shares rise amid IMDB streaming service reports

Amazon shares closed higher in the US Monday, following reports that its IMDB site is close to offering a free streaming service. That possible move, which could be confirmed this week, comes soon after the news satellite communication firm Iridium, has partnered with AWS to create a satellite cloud-based platform for the Internet of Things (IoT).

Amazon shares ended the US Monday trading session 0.07% higher at $2,004.36. The stock is also higher in out-of-hours activity.

Amazon’s IMDB streaming service

Numerous reports suggest that Amazon-owned IMDB is set to begin offering a TV streaming service, showing old films and series. The service will reportedly be free to Amazon Prime and Amazon Fire TV users and supported by ads.

Advertisers are also set to gain access to Amazon’s first-party data and also the third-party consumer data, from users of the streaming service.

While Amazon Prime is a popular streaming service for the tech giant, this new plan would open up a fresh revenue stream for Jeff Bezos’ firm, this time from the lucrative TV advertising market. Its thought a firm announcement of the news could be made in New York, this week.

AWS, Iridium cloud deal

It’s proving a busy year for Amazon, as not only is the IMDB streaming announcement likely due this week, but just last week, satellite communications firm Iridium, announced it had joined the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Partner Network to jointly develop CloudConnect.

CloudConnect will be the world’s first satellite cloud-based solution, to support broader coverage of support for the IoT.

“Iridium CloudConnect will completely change the speed at which a satellite IoT solution can be deployed and will allow existing AWS customers to keep everything the same on the back end, while opening up the opportunity to quickly expand their coverage,” says Iridium CEO Matt Desch.

“This is a major disruption for satellite IoT. Costs will drop, time to market will speed up, risk will be reduced, and AWS IoT customers that choose Iridium CloudConnect can now enjoy true global connectivity for their solutions,” Desch added.
