The company came into being in 1995 following the merger of Lockheed Corporation and Martin Marietta. Headquartered in North Bethesda, Maryland, the company specializes in the research, design, and development of technology systems products and services used in the security industry.
The company operates under four segments of Aeronautics that develop, air mobility aircraft and unmanned air vehicles. The MFC segment specializes in air and missile defense systems while the RMS segment develops military and commercial helicopters as well as ship and submarine systems. The space segment provides satellites and defense missile systems.
Billed as the world’s largest defense contractor, the company employs over 100,000 people worldwide. A good chunk of its revenues comes from military sales, most of which come from U.S government contracts. In 2008, the company received $38 billion worth of government contracts.
The company’s stock is currently listed on the New York Stock Exchange and is a component of both the S&P100 and S&P 500.
