An overwhelming curiosity in the aviation business by Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou is what led to the launch of easyJet. The serial entrepreneur birthed the idea of offering low-cost flights in 1995. Haji-Ioannou acquired start-up funds from his father and immediately set out to pursue his curiosity.
As it started a business, easyJet plc set up its first corporate office at Luton Airport, London. The low-cost airline has seen massive growth through a series of acquisitions.
Its inaugural flights were from London to Glasgow, but in 1996, it incorporated its first-ever international flights to Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Nice. This was accompanied by the first promotion, which resulted in more than 4 million calls within 4days.
Today, the low-cost airline has scheduled services on more than 1,000 routes. These are both domestic and international flights. With over 300 aircraft, easyJet plc functions in over 30 countries with almost 14,000 employees. It is listed on the LSE market.
