The company came into being as Sutherland sought to address the banking needs of people living in Hong Kong and the China Coast. The financial institution gets its name from the name Hong Kong merged with Shanghai Banking Corporation. HSBC is credited as the pioneer of many banking practices. It was the first bank to grace the Thailand market going as far as printing the country’s first banknotes.
