SSE Plc is a product of privatization and merger of two former electricity boards. In 1998, the Scottish Hydro Electric Board combined its assets and operations with Southern Electricity Board after they were privatized between 1990 and 1991. The two electricity boards generated and distributed electricity in England and Scotland.
After its establishment, SSE plc continued with the operations that were performed jointly by the two former electricity boards. SSE segments its business into Retail, Wholesale, and networks. Under the Retail sector, the company supplies electric energy and other energy sources to customers. The Wholesale segment entails management of services like gas production and other portfolios. Networks incorporate electricity and gas distribution as well as transmission of the electric energy to other networks.
The company has its headquarters in Perth, UK, and it serves the region as its sole market. SSE plc trades on the London Stock Exchange with SSE as its symbol. The company is part of the FTSE 100 component.
