William Wood founded Wood & Davidson as a fishing and fish processing company in 1912. In 1964, Sir Ian Wood joined his father in the business and changed the name to John Wood & Son. The company expanded its operations into general marine engineering. Later, the company branched its operations into oil fields and heavy construction. In 2017, the company merged with Amec Foster Wheeler, a major rival to form the John Wood Group Plc.
