What is Bumble?

Copy link to section

Bumble is a holding company that owns a range of dating apps. Its philosophy is about offering a healthier way to date that prioritises mental wellbeing. It’s eponymous app, Bumble, is best known for the fact that in heterosexual relationships, the woman has to message first.

Bumble was founded in 2014 by Whitney Wolfe Herd, who had previously been at Tinder, and who therefore had first-hand experience of the dating app world. Bumble is the second most popular dating app in North America, behind only Tinder.

The Bumble portfolio also includes Badoo, which is the most popular app in Europe and South America. The dating app market is dominated by Bumble and Match Group, which owns many of its competitors, including Tinder as well as Hinge, OkCupid, and more than 40 other apps.

There is a premium subscription service or users can buy certain features through the app. Most of the features offer ways to give you more chance of getting a match; longer time frames before the matches expire, an unlimited number of swipes per day, or reconnecting with expired matches.

A Bumble Boost membership offers these features as part of a monthly subscription, which costs $25 per month.

What is Bumble’s best selling service?

Its best selling service is a subscription to Bumble Boost, although the total number of users who use it still represent only a small percentage of the overall total. Around 2-3 million people are ‘fee paying customers’ who have paid for in-app features. 1.5 million of those are subscribers, out of a total of roughly 100 million users.
