Slack is a software company that offers an instant messaging app for businesses. Slack users can message each other, but also have virtual audio and visual calls, and share files.

Slack was founded in 2013, it went public in 2019 before being acquired by Salesforce in 2021. To invest in Slack now, you have to invest in Salesforce, which trades under the ticker symbol, CRM. Salesforce owns a number of companies and Slack forms just a part of the overall business.

Slack makes money through subscriptions. It offers three paid pricing tiers, depending on the size of the business. There’s a Pro subscription, which is the most basic package for £5 per user, per month, a Business+ package for more guaranteed uptime and additional features at £10 per user, per month, and an Enterprise package for the largest businesses.

What is Slack’s best selling product?

The majority of its users are on the free service, which obviously doesn’t make any money. It generates all of its revenue from the minority that do pay for a subscription, although it’s difficult to find out the exact breakdown of that data.

As Slack is owned by Salesforce, it no longer has to produce financial statements breaking down its own revenue figures, they are part of the parent company’s results. At the last estimate, about 130,000 out of 750,000 organisations that use Slack paid for a subscription.
