Quantum Resistant Ledger (QRL)

Quantum Resistant Ledger (QRL) is a blockchain project built around one central problem: the possibility that sufficiently powerful quantum computers could undermine widely used cryptographic signature schemes. Many established cryptocurrencies rely on elliptic-curve signatures, which are considered secure against today’s classical computers but may be vulnerable to future quantum attacks. QRL approaches that risk directly by using post-quantum cryptography at the protocol level.

The network is best known for its use of XMSS, or eXtended Merkle Signature Scheme, a hash-based digital signature system designed to resist both classical and quantum computing attacks. This gives QRL a distinct identity in the crypto market, where most projects focus on throughput, smart contracts, payments, or DeFi functionality rather than long-term cryptographic durability. Its native QRL coin is used for value transfer and network fees, while the ledger is designed to preserve transaction integrity even in a future where quantum computing is more advanced.

QRL was founded by Peter Waterland after research into the weaknesses that quantum computing could pose to existing blockchains. The project is open source and has attracted contributors with backgrounds in blockchain development, cryptography, engineering, and community operations. Its codebase has historically used Python components and emphasizes security-first design over rapid feature expansion.

The project’s appeal is strongest for users who view post-quantum readiness as an important requirement for digital assets intended to survive over many decades. QRL does not simply add quantum resistance as a marketing layer; it makes that protection the core purpose of the network.
