BioCardia, Inc. is a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on cell-based and cell-derived therapies for serious cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases. Its work is aimed at conditions where existing treatments may not adequately restore function or prevent disease progression, including forms of heart failure, chronic myocardial ischemia and acute lung injury.
The company’s lead programs are built around two bone marrow-derived therapeutic platforms. CardiAMP is an autologous therapy, meaning a patient’s own cells are collected, processed and delivered back to the heart. BioCardia is evaluating this approach for ischemic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and for refractory angina linked to chronic myocardial ischemia. These indications involve patients with limited options despite drug therapy, device therapy or revascularization procedures.
BioCardia also develops an allogeneic mesenchymal stem cell platform designed as an off-the-shelf treatment. Its CardiALLO program applies this technology to ischemic heart failure, while another program targets acute respiratory distress syndrome, a severe inflammatory lung condition. The allogeneic model is intended to support more standardized manufacturing and availability than patient-specific therapies.
A distinctive part of BioCardia’s strategy is its emphasis on targeted delivery to the heart. The company has developed catheter-based systems intended to place therapeutic cells in precise areas of cardiac tissue. As a clinical-stage business, BioCardia’s value is closely tied to trial progress, regulatory outcomes, financing needs and the broader viability of regenerative medicine in cardiovascular care.
