Matson, Inc. is a US transportation and logistics company best known for its ocean shipping services linking the US mainland with markets that depend heavily on maritime supply routes. Its core Ocean Transportation business carries freight to and from Hawaii, Alaska, Guam, Micronesia and islands in the South Pacific, while also serving selected Asia-to-US trade lanes. The company transports a broad mix of containerised goods, including food, household products, retail merchandise, vehicles, construction materials and other cargo that supports local economies.
The company’s position is distinctive because many of its routes serve non-contiguous or island markets where reliable ocean freight capacity is essential and alternatives are limited. Matson operates vessels, terminals, equipment and related infrastructure that allow it to provide scheduled liner services, expedited shipping options and intermodal connections. Its Hawaii service has historically been a central part of the business, supported by long-standing customer relationships and a focus on dependable transit times.
Matson also runs a Logistics segment that complements its shipping network. This division provides highway brokerage, freight forwarding, warehousing, distribution, supply chain services and other transportation management solutions for customers across North America. While logistics broadens the company’s reach, ocean transportation remains the main revenue driver and the foundation of its competitive profile.
For investors, Matson represents exposure to niche US ocean freight markets, Pacific trade flows and supply chain activity. Its performance can be influenced by freight demand, vessel operating costs, fuel prices, port conditions, consumer spending in served markets and broader trends in global shipping capacity.
