Range Resources Corp (RRC)

The company has evolved significantly since its earlier history as Lomak Petroleum, which went public in 1980 and later became Range Resources in 1998. After pursuing a broader multi-basin strategy, Range shifted decisively toward Appalachia and sold its Permian assets in 2013. Its 2016 merger with Memorial Resource Development briefly expanded its scale, but the company later sold those acquired assets and returned to a more concentrated Appalachian model.

Range is distinctive because of its pure-play exposure to one of the largest and lowest-cost natural gas basins in the United States. The Marcellus shale gives the company a deep inventory of horizontal drilling locations, while its production mix also includes liquids that can add value when NGL prices are favorable. At the same time, its results are closely linked to commodity prices, regional gas basis differentials, service costs, takeaway capacity and capital discipline. Investors typically assess Range through the quality of its acreage, drilling efficiency, reserve base, balance sheet strength and ability to generate free cash flow through changing natural gas cycles.
