Spero Therapeutics (SPRO)

Spero’s lead programme is tebipenem pivoxil hydrobromide, also known as tebipenem HBr, an investigational oral carbapenem-class antibiotic. It is being developed for adults with complicated infections caused by certain Gram-negative bacteria, including strains where resistance makes standard treatment challenging. The oral profile is an important part of the programme’s potential value, as carbapenems are typically administered intravenously and an effective pill could support outpatient treatment or earlier discharge from hospital when clinically appropriate.

The company’s pipeline also includes SPR720, an oral antibiotic candidate aimed at pulmonary non-tuberculous mycobacterial disease, a rare condition that can cause chronic lung infection and is difficult to manage with current multidrug regimens. In addition, Spero is developing SPR206, an intravenously administered next-generation polymyxin candidate intended for severe multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections in hospitalised patients.
