Cosmos Hub (ATOM)
Cosmos Hub is the original hub blockchain in the Cosmos ecosystem, a network of independent blockchains designed to communicate with one another. Cosmos is built around the idea of an “internet of blockchains”, where separate chains can maintain their own validators, rules, and applications while exchanging assets and messages through shared interoperability standards. The Cosmos Hub uses proof-of-stake consensus and is secured by validators and delegators who stake its native token, ATOM.
A key part of Cosmos is the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, commonly known as IBC. IBC allows compatible blockchains to transfer tokens and data without relying on a centralized intermediary. Many Cosmos-based chains are built with the Cosmos SDK and use CometBFT, formerly known as Tendermint, for Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus. This modular architecture lets developers create application-specific blockchains rather than deploying every project onto one shared smart-contract network.
ATOM has several functions within the Cosmos Hub. It is used for staking, where holders can delegate tokens to validators and help secure the chain in return for protocol rewards. It is also used in governance, giving stakers a role in voting on proposals that affect the Hub’s parameters, upgrades, and broader direction. Transaction fees on the network also help prevent spam. Cosmos Hub’s importance comes from its position as a flagship chain in one of the most established interoperability ecosystems in crypto, linking independent networks while preserving their sovereignty.
