Polkadot (DOT)
Polkadot is a blockchain network designed to connect many specialised chains within a shared ecosystem. Its core idea is that separate blockchains should be able to exchange data, messages, and value without relying on a central intermediary. Instead of trying to make one chain handle every use case, Polkadot uses a multi-chain architecture in which independent networks can operate in parallel while benefiting from common security and interoperability.
The network is built around a central Relay Chain, which coordinates consensus and security, and parachains, which are application-specific blockchains connected to it. These parachains can be tailored for different purposes, such as decentralised finance, gaming, identity, data services, or enterprise applications. Polkadot is deliberately flexible: a connected chain does not need to follow a single standard model, and projects can design their own governance, token economics, and transaction logic. Many teams build Polkadot-compatible chains using Substrate, a framework associated with Parity Technologies that lets developers create custom blockchain runtimes.
DOT is Polkadot’s native crypto asset. It is used in network governance, staking, and bonding activities related to parachain participation. Holders can take part in decisions on protocol upgrades and other network changes, while validators and nominators help secure the system through proof-of-stake mechanics.
Polkadot’s distinctive position in the crypto market comes from its focus on cross-chain infrastructure. It aims to reduce fragmentation between blockchain networks by allowing them to remain independent while still communicating and sharing security through a common base layer.
