Reserve Rights (RSR)
Reserve Rights (RSR) is the utility and governance token of the Reserve protocol, a stablecoin infrastructure project focused on creating asset-backed tokens known as RTokens. Rather than relying on a single bank deposit or one centrally controlled reserve, RTokens are designed to be backed by baskets of on-chain assets managed through smart contracts. These collateral baskets can include ERC-20 tokens and, depending on configuration, may include yield-bearing DeFi assets or other tokenised forms of value.
RSR has two main roles in the Reserve system. First, it is used in governance, allowing holders to participate in decisions about the configuration and management of specific RTokens. Second, it can be staked as overcollateralisation for an RToken. Staked RSR acts as first-loss capital if collateral backing that RToken suffers a default or severe impairment, helping protect holders of the stable asset.
In exchange for taking that risk, RSR stakers may receive a share of revenue generated by the RToken they support. This creates a market-based structure in which different RTokens can compete for collateral, governance attention, and backstop capital. RSR holders are not required to stake and can choose which RTokens, if any, they wish to support.
The Reserve project was co-founded by Nevin Freeman and Matt Elder and launched RSR in 2019. The token is issued on Ethereum as an ERC-20 asset, benefiting from Ethereum’s security and infrastructure. Its fixed maximum supply is 100 billion tokens, with allocations released over time according to the project’s vesting and emissions structure.
