Tezos (XTZ)
Tezos is an open-source smart contract blockchain built around formal governance, security-focused development, and proof-of-stake consensus. Its native token, XTZ, is used to pay transaction fees, interact with applications, and participate in network consensus and governance. The project was proposed in 2014 by Arthur and Kathleen Breitman and its mainnet launched in 2018.
A defining feature of Tezos is its self-amending protocol. Rather than relying on informal coordination and contentious hard forks for major changes, Tezos allows token holders to vote on protocol upgrades on-chain. Validators, known as bakers, can propose and approve changes, while XTZ holders may delegate their staking rights without transferring custody of their tokens. This liquid proof-of-stake model is designed to broaden participation in network security.
Tezos has long positioned itself as a platform for applications where reliability matters. Its smart contract stack was developed with formal verification in mind, a method used to mathematically check code behaviour and reduce the risk of critical bugs. This has made the network attractive to developers working on financial applications, tokenised assets, digital collectibles, gaming, and institutional blockchain use cases.
The ecosystem continues to evolve through community-approved upgrades, with ongoing work focused on scalability, rollups, composability, and easier development using more widely adopted programming languages. For investors and users, XTZ represents exposure to a blockchain that prioritises upgradeability, decentralised decision-making, and long-term protocol resilience.
