ABBVIE (ABBV)
NYSE Market Closed
AbbVie Inc. is a global biopharmaceutical company that develops and commercializes prescription medicines across immunology, oncology, neuroscience, aesthetics, eye care, and other specialty areas. The company was created in 2013 when it separated from Abbott Laboratories, and it has since built one of the industry’s largest portfolios of branded drugs.
Immunology remains central to AbbVie’s identity. Humira became one of the world’s best-selling medicines, and the company is working to transition growth toward newer therapies such as Skyrizi and Rinvoq as biosimilar competition affects Humira in major markets. In oncology, AbbVie markets treatments including Imbruvica and Venclexta, which are used in blood cancers and developed through important industry partnerships.
AbbVie also has a sizeable aesthetics and therapeutics platform following its 2020 acquisition of Allergan. That deal brought Botox Cosmetic and therapeutic Botox, along with other products in facial aesthetics, eye care, and central nervous system disorders. The company continues to use acquisitions and internal research to broaden its pipeline, including the 2024 purchases of Cerevel Therapeutics to expand neuroscience programs and ImmunoGen to add oncology assets.
The company’s performance depends on patent cycles, regulatory approvals, clinical trial results, pricing dynamics, and physician adoption of its medicines. Its scale, commercial reach, and diversified portfolio help reduce reliance on any single therapy over time, although immunology remains a major driver. For investors, AbbVie offers exposure to a large pharmaceutical business focused on specialty medicines, cash-generating established brands, and pipeline development in high-value therapeutic categories.
