Broadcom Inc. is a global technology company that combines a large semiconductor franchise with a growing infrastructure software business. Its chip operations span networking, broadband, wireless, storage, and industrial markets, with particular strength in high-performance connectivity and custom silicon used in data centres. As demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure expands, Broadcom’s custom AI accelerators and networking chips have become an increasingly important part of its growth profile.
The company mainly operates as a fabless semiconductor designer, outsourcing much of its production to foundry partners while retaining selected in-house manufacturing capabilities. One notable example is its film bulk acoustic resonator, or FBAR, filter technology, which is used in premium smartphones including Apple’s iPhone. Broadcom’s semiconductor portfolio also includes switching chips, merchant silicon, optical components, and connectivity products that support cloud computing, telecom networks, enterprise hardware, and consumer devices.
Broadcom has also built a major software platform through acquisitions. Its software products serve large enterprises, banks, telecom operators, public-sector agencies, and other organisations that need reliable infrastructure, cybersecurity, mainframe, and virtualization tools. The acquisition of VMware significantly expanded its role in enterprise IT, adding widely used virtualization and cloud infrastructure products to a software portfolio that already included assets from CA Technologies, Symantec’s enterprise security business, and Brocade.
Broadcom’s identity is shaped by disciplined consolidation and a focus on mission-critical technologies. The company brings together assets from Avago Technologies, the former Broadcom, VMware, Brocade, CA Technologies, and Symantec, giving it exposure to both physical digital infrastructure and the software systems that manage it.
