The company’s core profit engine remains the U.S. tobacco market. Philip Morris USA sells Marlboro, the leading cigarette brand in the country, which held about 40% share in 2024. Altria also has a leading position in U.S. smokeless tobacco and a significant presence in machine-made cigars through John Middleton. These businesses operate in mature and highly regulated categories, where brand strength, pricing power, distribution, and compliance capabilities are central to performance.

Altria is also investing in alternatives to traditional cigarettes as consumer preferences and regulation evolve. It owns the On nicotine pouch brand through Helix Innovations, acquired vaping company Njoy Holdings in 2023, and works with Japan Tobacco through a U.S. heated tobacco joint venture. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to compete in reduced-risk and smoke-free nicotine products, although regulatory approvals, consumer adoption, and category competition remain important variables.

Beyond nicotine, Altria holds strategic investments including a stake in Anheuser-Busch InBev, the global brewer, and an interest in cannabis company Cronos. For investors, Altria is distinctive for its high-margin domestic tobacco franchise, strong cash generation, and exposure to both legacy cigarettes and emerging nicotine formats. Its risks include declining cigarette volumes, litigation, taxation, regulatory restrictions, and execution challenges in newer product categories.
